FULL DISCLOSURE: I just recently (April 2017) bought this Canon Powershot SX40 HS camera from a secondhand store at a very attractive price ($10 US). Stinkin thing. I would happily pay for a new genuine battery , I just wish I could get one on a try before I buy basis because they are not cheap especially if its more money to pay out then still have to send off for repair if it doesnt work - I guess at least I have another genuine spare. I've adopted a handful of these "orphans" over the last couple of years.I'm always impressed to see someone put a bit of effort into doing a little logical troubleshooting like this. I would also double check to make sure the batteries are fully charged. There's also probably a micro switch on the battery and memory card door that won't allow the camera to boot up if the door is open. It kind of restores my faith in mankind. Maybe install the battery leaving the door open, hold down the power on switch and then close the door or manually depress the the micro switch. The battery voltage may be normal but the battery may have lost its capacity to hold a charge. Initially, it turned on but would turn itself off after only 1 or 2 minutes, the same thing happened with the second new battery. Following are the symptoms I observed the camera exhibiting: Symptom #1 - With a fully charged battery installed, the camera will only power on once per battery insertion. An overcharged battery isn't exactly what you would expect to cause this kind of problem.Now, about using the "playback" button to power the camera on and off... If you purchase it from a store with a liberal return policy, like Amazon, you can return it for either no charge or just shipping charges which should not be too bad for a small item. Terms — Symptom #2 -- After getting to the "it won't turn on" state as described above, if I pull the battery out, even just halfway, then press it back in, and then press the On/Off button, the camera powers up and again works fine. Genuine or otherwise. The "power on but once per battery removal and battery reinsertion" symptom was still present regardless of  whether the Playback button or the On/Off button was used.
